GOVERNMENT DEFEATED AND

RESIGNED.

SYDNEY, December 5. The Government were defeated by a majority of one on an amendment to the Address in Reply. The Ministry has resigned. Arrived : The Easby, yesterday; the Wakatipu and the Australia to-day.

The Australian Steam Navigation Co.'s steamer Florence Irving has stranded oft" Port Stephens. The crew and passengers, except a child, were saved. The fate of the steamer is doubtful.
