INTERPROVINCIAL FOOTBALL MATCH.

CANTERBURY V. AUCKLANB. Very general regret was experienced at the steady downpour of rain, which at daybreak this morning was seen to be descending. It was obvious that theusnal Ellershe weather was destined to mar the usual Football Match between Canterbury and Auckland, announced to be played at BHf^? gardens this afternoon. The number of wet holidays which have been experienced in Auckland during the last two years is remarkable. About three out of four have been characterised by this unpleasant peculiarity, lne fact that the visiting team were bound to tfatch the return boat on Friday, made it impossible to postpone the match, which is goiag on at the time this is being written. As a matter of consequence, the attendance was by no means good, and there was an entire absence of ladies. The Committee were distinguished by having rosettes composed of. the colours of the two teams com*

baned. A meeting o f the Auckland j riu^ a5\ held ab 8 °'clock last night, anrt the tanal arrangements were made. MrW tut -l? Bo? WafJ elected captain of the team, and Mr a, bharland was appointed to perform the arduous duty of umpire. We should mention that Mr Neilson officiated in that capacity on behalf of Canterbury. A suggestion was received from the captain of Canterbury that four twenty minutes play should be "substituted for four half hours, but this was not entertained favourably by the Auckland players. The system, of scoring by points was again adopted, the pcale being exactly the same as that employed in last year's interprovincial matches, namely, C fer a goal, S for a touch down, and J for a force down. The following are the names of the teams : — Canterbury.—J. Anderson, '{Merchiston, Edmbro'); J. Barker, (Christchurch College); C. L. Croxton, (LoEdoii); B. CotterJJL h"stchurch College); J. E. Evans, (Cheltenham) • G. H. Lee, (Westminster); id. Vv. Moore, (Eadley College); H. McCardell, (Christchurch College) ; W. Milltf>B, J. Millton, L. M. Ollivicr, D. Potts, A. Potts, G. Potts. Henderson, Cn-ter, Whewell, W. Robinson, Paul. The rain continued pitilessly all the morning. At one o'clock a slight olearingoff took place, but the watery condition of the heavens deterred many from venturino out.
