European advices from a multitude of sources represent business and all productive enterprises as being worse than they have been during the present generation, and without any visible sign of improvement The North and North-west Lancashire Cotton Spinners' and Manufacturers' Association has resolved to reduce wages 10 por cent. The reduction affpets from 50,000 to 60,000 operatives. The local associations met 'and secured a postponement of the reduction for a month. At a meeting of Durham colliers to consider the proposed reduction of wages 20 000 were in favour of arbitration against 16 000 for strike. The secretary of the Miners' Association has, consequently, informed the secretary of the Colliery Proprietors' Association that the proposed arbitration is accepted. The great depression id the Cleveland iron trade appears likely to culminate in disastrous* financial complications.
