Dunedin Races.
The following are the events, news of which arrived too late for our Saturday's issue :— THE STEEPLECHASE. An objection was laid against Auckland Kate on the ground of the Jockey dropping his whip at the water jump and getting it at second time round. It was disallowed. FORBURY HANDICAP. Cloth of Gold 1 Ariel 2 Tadmor ... ... ... ... 3 Pungawerewere, King Phillip, Hercules, Right Bower, and Haphazard also went. Pungawerewere rushed off with the lead, followed by Right Bower and Ariel. At the mile Ariel challenged Pungawerewere, who collapsed as soon as collared. On rounding into the straight Cloth of Gold ran up to Aiiel, and boring the Auckland colt on the rails won by a neck, Tadmor a grand third, and Pungawerewere fovirth. A proteat was entered against the winner for jamming Areil on the rails, but after evidence had been taken it was disallewed. TOWN PLATE. GuyFawkea 1 Tattler _ ... 2 All others scratched for this race, which was simply a quiet canter twice round the course, and an easy win for Guy Fawkes. On coming up the straight both jockeys were hissed. FLYING HANDICAP. 1 "Guy Fawkes 2 Wee Lad 3 Pungawerewere 0 Parawhenua, Pungawerewere, and.Steamer also started. This was a very exciting race. Fishhook and Guy Fawkes rapidly overhauled Pungawerewere, who rushed off with the lead. As soon as the filly was caught she ceased to run. On coming into the straight run Fishhook increased the lead, winning by two lengths, Wee Lad a fair third. HURRY-SCURRY HANDICAP. Glengarry 1 Wee Lad 2 Seven started. Hector got off with the lead, but after the first half mile was collared by Glengarry, Wee Lad, and Pakeha, the former winning easily. CONSOLATION STAKES. St. lb. Elfin King 7 10 — 1 Rightßower 7 4— 2 Haphazard 7 2 — 0 Merry Monarch ... ... 6 7— 0 Sir William 6 5 — 0 Steamer ... 5 10 — 0 A capital race ensued between the King and Right Bower. The former won by half a neck only. There was a crowded house at the Opera on Friday night, "II Trovatore " being repeated for the occasion. Blondin had over 5000 spectators in his pavilion.
