MOUNT HOBSOH" BOYS 1 SCHOOL.
On Friday the ; boya attending this school: I were examined by the Ten. Arohdeacon rt Pritt, and Messrs Angus and Morgan, three. members of the local board. The subjects for examination were reading,, writing, arith* metic, grammar, dictation, -with recitations. The general result of the examination wal:very satisfactory. It was evident that th^ boys had under their present master, Mr Coburne, made steady progress,. solid rather than showy, and therefore realty valuable. The boys', especially the upper classes, dfe*|» played an intelligent knowledge of aritkmetie and grammar. The competition in geography was very animated, and a knowledge '<&*&tl geography of New Zealand was display > which probably exceeds that of most adult* ' pupils, with a handsome present as a smftUfj token of their appreciation of h«r servic*'J

The pupils of this school spent a very happy day on Friday, the 17th, on the occasion of the break np for the summer holidays. The Key G. Brown distributed the prizes' expressing himself pleased with the improvement made, as exhibited by the examination papers, and making a few remarks for the fntnre guidance of the pupils. Mr. Brown, who has always taken a deep interest in the school, gave two special prizes for English history. The happy winners were Miss McGregor and Miss Joughin.
CHRISTMAS^EXAMINATIONS OF CATHOLIC BOYS' SCHOOLS.
On 'Tuesday the annualf examination! of Sfc. Peter's Boys' School, Hobson-street, were hcsld, when the pupils were tested in their knowledge of the different branches in which they had been instrncted during the past year. The answering was considered creditable, especially in the department of mathematics. On Wednesday the morning was devoted to the examining of the pupils of the Newton Catholic School, and the afternoon to the examining of the pupils of St. Patrick's, Hobson-street, who also answered very well. A nicely arranged programme of readings, recitations, and singing was gone through most satisfactorily. The pupils of this school also presented a well-worded address to the clergy. The examinations of the schools were conducted by the Revs. W. McDonald, O'Dwyer, Grange, and Simpson. At the conclusion of each the E-ev. Father Walter addressed the pupils in terms of commendation for the progress they had made since the last examination. DEVONPORT DISTRICT SCHOOL. ' Tho yearly examination of this school came off on Monday, the 20th inst. Presided over by Mr Sommerville, who was assisted by Mr Brown, the test questions placed before the pnpils, 140 present, were most satisfactorily answered, and in the various branches of an English education a marked proficiency was attained. The committee had provided handsome and suitable prizes, and these, supplemented by others kindly given by Messrs Rees and Somerfield, were presented to the most deserving. A number of ladies and gentlemen residing in thedistrict evinced by their presence the interest which is felt In educational matters. The head-master was honored with the best thanks pfjkhe committee, and the school then broke np for Christmas.
