POLICE COURT.—This Day.
(Before R. C. Barstow, Esq., R.M.) MASTERMAN READY. Thisjaged man, known as Pat Ready, vis brought up for being drunk last night, and fined 20s, or seven days. Jane Goldsmith, an old hand, was charged with the same offence, and was fined 5s and costs. A VAGRANT. Jane Jackson was charged under the Vagrancy Act, with having no visible lawful means of living. Prisoner, a smart-looking young girl, of 19, who had been before the Court a number of times, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labour. COWARDLY. Charles Francis Eggarte was charged with I assaulting Anne Mene Lnli, a Maori woman, 1 by striking her in the face with a Btick last night. Prisoner, a decent-looking young man, pleaded not guilty. Anne deposed that she lived with her parents, and while walking along the street the European assaulted her. Constable Allen was on duty in Queenstreet, opposite the Auckland Hotel, when prisoner gave her a severe poke with a stick, and burst out laughing. Prisoner, a seaman lately of the British Empire, said the alleged assault was purely an accident. Fined 20a and costs or 14 days imprisonment. ELIZABETH NELSON. Elizabeth. Nelson, on remand, again appeared, to prove that she was sot a rogue and vagabond, but a lady with an income of £100 a year. Catherine Sullivan said that defendant was a tenant in the house of her sister-in-law, bat she had only been in the - colony a month; and all that she knew was that prisoner bad told her that she was an Inspector's wife, and in receipt of £100 a year, she knewco more. One month's imprisonment with hard labour. REMAINING CASES. We are compelled to condense the w mainder of the Court business. —The case of threatening language, Bain v. Bain, was withdrawn, defendant paying coats.—A charge" against John Earle, of stealing a Bhawl from a Maori girl, was also withdrawn. A number of education rate cases were adjourned or. given for the Receiver, with costs. AIXEGED ARSON. George and Margaret Strong again ap* peared on a charge of setting fire to premises in Short-street, near St. Paul's, on tho 18th of December, with intent, &c. Charles Williamson deposed to having a; mortgage of £250 on the property, which was shewn upon a plan prepared by Mr T. B.Cameron. It was insured in the Sou British for £200.—'Andrew Farge valued *h house at £100 to £150.—George Thomson Chapman deposed to finding a basket of tar and shavings and burning rubbish. Mrs Strong met him three days after, and said Strong was an innocent man. —Andrew Fernandez also gave evidence, and thecas* will be continued to-morrow. .;,
