HARBOUR BOARD.

The usual fortnightlyjtneeting of the Harbour Board was held this afternoon. Present : Messrs. Daldy (Clmrman>, Mays, Eaton. Buchanan, Tole, C.-unpbell, McKtnzie, Niccol, and Holdship. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meerinj were read and confirm* d. LETTERS. A letter was read from Mr P. A. Phillips, asking the Board to asfcisc in the carrying out jointly certaiu contemplated works in Freeman's Bay. It w^s moved, seconded and carried : "That Messrs. Daidy and Tole bti appointed a. committee to confer with the city council on all matters relating to the works in tne Bay." REPORTS. A report of works committee minutes as to the contract of Messrs. Mc'Cabe and Walsh, was received. LEASING- Or EORESHGRE NORTH SHORE. !? It was decided to take no action in this matter. LANDING POWDER. The Endowment Committee recommended that this subject be enquired into by Messrs Daldy and Niccol. The recommendation was adopted. PILOT COMMITTEE. Mr. Oliver Mays moved: "That the pilot service committee having been consti tuted to enquire into and report upon the pilot service of the port, and having done the work assigned it they be now discharged." Mr. Mays said that he b«lieved that tbe appointment of the committee was for a special emergency when the Miltiades wen» ashore. He thought the committee should have been dissolved when the snecial business was done. In his opiniou they had no power to come together and do any business that the Board knew nothing of, as in ths case of allowing PLot James to go away from the port. Mr. M. Niecol seconded Mr. May's motion and io doing so endorsed the remarks of the proposer. J-he chairman said if anybody was to blame in the matter of sending Pilot Jam s to the Kai.para in Mas himselr. The pilot service committee had only recently been busy on the new pilot schooner so th^t their woik was not all all done. He had received the application from Mr. Stone for Pilot James's services and he thought be was doing tne right thiuu iv calling the pilot committee together to decide the master. Cap*. On Mr. May's motion being put it was carried. QUERX-STREET ■\N'HAI!F. The sum of £75 was voted for repairing the solid portion of the Queen-street wharf. THK LO IN. A statement shewing the prsiim of t c loan was read and brought out the following results:—Negotiated, £10(5,494 17s. ; remaining to be~ sold, £42.400. The commissions on negotiation amounted to £2041 13s. Id. ; total expended receipts, from £15,000 loan, £142,501 7s. lid. The expenditure already incurred is £9,144 9s. lid. ; works under contract, £32,939. Estimated cost of works to be made ujder the Auckland Harbour Act, 1574, £100,715. Depoits have been made on loan account of £50.000 at 6 per cent.; £10,000 at 5J perceno. ; and £550 at G{j per cent, with the Bank of New Zealand. ACCOUNTS. H£Payments of accounts ordered viz., general account, £4G9 3s lid ; loan account. £2792 4d. - Total £3201 4s 3d. STATEMENT OF FUNDS. Total in bank, £3201 3s 8d ; cash on hand, £20 189 Id.—Total£32B2 Is9d. By accounts ordered to be paid, £415 2s sd. —To balance £2866 19s 4d. LOAN ACCOUNT. To balance in bank, £13,646 Is 3d ; by accounts per payment £827 10s 3d.—Balance £12,808 11s. CONSULTING ENGINEER. Mr Mays moved, " That it is desirable to appoint a Consulting Engineer who shall be resident in Auckland." Mr Buchanan seconded the motion. [ The Chairman asked Mr Mays if he was aware that the subject he had broached was already before the Works Commitee. Mr Niccol haviDg made a few remarks, Mr O. Mayssaid he was sa'isfied to defer bis motion till the Works Committee had brought in their report. The motion was then carried, subject to this deferment. This was the whole of the business, it being understood that Mr. Tole would bring forward a motion at the next meeting for the appointment of a Standing Committee.
