PROVINCIAL COUNCIL.
In the Provincial Council yesterday, in reply to Mr Goldie, the Provincial Treasurer stated that it was the intention of the Government to proceed with the erection of a new slaughter-house, but the question of site would be submitted to the Council for an expression of opinion. In reply to Mr Crawford, Mr Wood said that the General Government had written stating that the sale of the Pahutahi block, Poverty Bay would take place soon. Mr Crawford said the block was one of the finest in the province, some of it worth £10 an acre ; the right to cut grass seed on it was let for £450 a year.—ln reply to Mr Goldie, the Provincial Treasurer said Mr Sheehan had telegraphed that he would be in Auckland on Tuesday, when Mr Goldie would have an opportunity of puttins; his question regarding the time devoted by the Provincial Secretary to his duties, and the amount of pay he had received.—The motion for the adoption of the £1000 grant to Mrs Williamson was deferred on the motion of Mr May until the estimates should be under consideration. —The motion of Mr 'Dargaville, asking the Superintendent to set aside 100,000 acres of land as an educational endowment, was withdrawn after discussion. —-On the motion of Mr Swanson, the petition of the Auckland Improvement Commissioner relative to the Grammar. School Site was referred to a committee. The report of the Grievance Committee on the petition of Mr J. H. Field recommending' the payment of £50 was ordered to be transmitted to the Superintendent.—The motion of Mr Lundon asking for a return shewing the mode of expending the £60,000 grant for roads in the North was carried, and, the motion by Mr Bagnall for returns of the expenditure on various votes was also carried. —Various papers were laid on the table. On the motion of Mr Rees, £300 was ordered to be placed on the estimates for the purpose of defraying the expenses of the committee appointed to inquire into the purchase of native land.—During the afternoon the Provincial Treasurer delivered the financial statement, a summary of which appears in our leading columns to-day. • The Council adjourned until Tuesday next.
