The Evening Star: WITH WHICH ARE INCORPORATED The Evening News and the Morning News.

THURSDAY, APRIL 29, 1875

For the cause that Incks tutslatiifnw For the wrong- Uns uooJs re-ii-mniU "« the future in the cii.<f;i!u--A_»d lha crood Ihjt w« nan ■!•.

A case has just been brought under our notice by one of our leading citizens, which fairly illustrates the position of the province under the dog-in-the-manger policy of the General Government. He has received a letter from a farmer in the old country having ten children all brought up to agricultural pursuits, and with a considerable amount of money. This correspondent desires to come out and avail himself of the Auckland Waste Lands Act, but is anxious to know before hand whether in case he pays the passages of his family, there will really be land available for settlement ms of that Act. It is needless for us to say that there will not, and that the General Government still retaining in their hands the whole of the available land, and neither allowing; special settlement themselves, nor permitting the power to the Provincial Gov eminent, the man so coming would, with his family, be obliged to go to lodgings and ,pine over the misfortune of the day on which he first dreamt of coming to Auckland. It ia well known that there are several persons, with means, at present hanging on about Auckland in the position in which this intending immigrant would find himself. No one can question that the conduct of the General Government towards Auckland province at the present hour is, in this respect, wilfully and maliciously hostile ; and the present facilities (?) for settlement in the province should intensify the feelings of affection with which some appear to be so enamoured of a Wellington administration of our local interests.
