(From our own Correspondent.) This day. Attempt to Raise the Una.

Captain Fairchild endeavoured to raise the sunken steam tug, Una, but it was too heavily laden and too firmly embedded in the sand. The decks were torn asunder in the attempt. The buoy on Pania Rock has been re* placed.

Interesting ExperimentIt is intended to make experiments on the 450 ft. artesian piping expended on the recent attempt to get water at the Spit. Captain Fairchild purposes placing a charge of lithofracture at the lowest attainable points in the pipe, which will be filled with water and iron cap fastened on the top. When the explosion takes place the shock is expected to be sufficient to raise the pipe or loosen it bo that it can be easily drawn out. Doubts are expressed as to the feasibility of the scheme, but it is worth trying. Sir Donald McLean. Sir Donald McLean's stay here is of uncertain duration. Reports state thab many persons are out duck shooting, although the season does not commence till May Ist. The birds are reported as plentiful. It has been a long dry season, very favourable to the young birds. The Drought.

Prevalence of Sickness. There are many cases of sickness, but not a|serious increase. Doctors differ as to kind of fever prevalent, and whether brought here by immigration ships, but the public has very little doubt on the subject. The new Colonial bank premises are being rapidly completed, and business will open shortly. It is a neat and appropriate building. A new hotel is being put np at Woodville, Seventy Mile Bush, at the junction of Mate "Road and Main South Road from Napier to Wanganui and Wellington via Palmerston. At present there is no hotel from Tamaki to Palmerston. The bridge Manawatu gorge is expected to be open in a few weeks.
