PORT CEALMERS,
[From OHr own Correspondent.] This day.
A Salt's Plea.
In a case at the Police Court to-day, Scott, at seaman on the newly-arrived ship William Davie, charged with broaching cargo, made an amusing confession. He admitted taking the contents of two cases of old torn, but contended that other people, including the doctor and mates, were drinking, and he did not see why he should abstain. He received eight weeks imprisonment, and pay for the two cases of old torn. He was absolutely convicted upon his own evidence.
Daniel Davies, seaman of tße same ship, wag charged with striking the 3rd mate with a sling-shot. The evidence was suggestive of queer doings on board. The Magistrate, Mr Mansford, ordered a remand, and directed defendant to summons the 3rd mate for striking him.
The Shooting Star for Auckland. On January 2nd the Keldron signalled on the Equator the Shooting Star for Auckland. Rain has fallen.
