The Maori King.
The Proposed Meeting with
the GS-overnor
Tawhiao Opposed to Meeting
at Kawhia.
RAGLAN.
[From our own Correspondent.] March 31
Two days ago Mr Bush —man of business for this district to Sir Donald McLean— proceed to Aotca, where the Maori King is now staying. It is reported that the object of Mr Bush's visit is to interview the Maori X ing about the arrangements for the long-talked-about meeting between the King and Sir Donald McLean and the Governor. There is said to bo a hitch about holding the meeting at Kawhia Those Hauhaus who visit Raglan, who know the Eoyal mind (or their own, which is nearly the same thing) say that, although Sir Donald McLean has ofFered to bring " a ship-load of provisions " to Kawhia, th-y prefer to hold their meeting at Te Kuiti : because holding it at Kawhia will bo equal to opening the Port of Ivawhias, which they do not intend doing. Even if the meeting is held, and King Tawhaio graciously accepts the thousand or two a y<;ar pocket money offered to him, cvi hono ! It is improbable that a general peace will be made, for the Hauhaus say that they wish things to remain as they now aro, for " they get whatever they like to ask for;" besides they (the Hauhaus) say they do as they pleabe. When they shot the late Mr Todd, and when they pommelled MrMackay, •they were suid to act without the King's consent.
Time and grog are rapidly solving the Maori difficulty, so all this teasing about meetingH and proposals of Sir Donald to open still wider his lavish hand had better be left alone.
