(PER STAR CARRIER PIGEON.) «. -' Reported Gold Struck, Claims to the Coal Seams. PAEROA. (From our Special iCorrespondent.) This day. A report has just come in that the prospectors had struck good payable gold. The hearing of applicants is expected to take place this week. A share in a claim next the prospectors' changed hands the other day for £20. Dixon and party, together with natives, have put in an application for a lease of coal. Dixon discovered seams some years ago. A large number of natives are collecting at Pukateawairahi to divide £500 handed to them yesterday by Mr Mackay. i
Sporting readers will find in our telegraphic columns a special telegram from our own correspondent relative to the training for the Dunedin race-meeting. The forthcoming races are regarded in the South as the great event of the year, and a proportionate amount of interest in the result is felt in all parts of the colony. Our correspondent has already wired from time to time the preliminary preparations, betting, &c, and will keep Auckland readers well posted up in the progress of the meeting.
