THE FOR OF THE LAND.
Fotjl monster ! that feeds on the vitals of man ; That brings all the evils of life in its van ; That's welcom'd in palaces, spacious and grand, Exalted by men, tho' the foe of the land.
Its victims are many, its patronage great, From the plebian low to the Monarch in state ; And great is the numbers and mighty the band That worships this monster, thefoe of the land. The orphan and widow bereave for the sire, 1 he mother so fond sees her darling expire, And grieve for those dearest who could not withstand i Alcohol—seducer ! the foe of the land. LThe gaol, the asylum, the gallows, the grave, . Receive the poor sot, the inebriate slave, .Whose body and soul are both equally dam'd . j Thro' using strong; liquor, the foe of the land. That basest of idols, the Jauggernaut car, That mangled its victims from near and afar, Methinks .as a, motto should go hand in hand ' j With man's greatest idol, the foe of the land. Aye, the Jauggernaut is a specimen true, Tho' it? victims were but a fanatical crew; ]Who'» limits were bounded by India's strand, • Bnt where ends the pow*r of the foe of the land. Where the sun sets not, nor its radiance grow dim, I Universally felt is the monster grim ; East, West, North, and South, there are thousands whose brand : Is misery and want thro' the foe of the land. Were I to write on till- my soul takes its flight From this body of clay I could not indite The evils and sorrows that burst from the brand i Of the Devastator, the foe pf the land. Then pass not its way, nor accept of the drink, . That hurls, you unconsciously over-the brink, j Of the yawning abyss that Satan has plan'd I Thro' his ag»nt strong drink, the foe of the land, ■
