October 18.- —The Government have converted a portion of the Military Barracks into an industrial school for 400 children. —The racehorses Barbelle and Barbarian were safely landed.—Patrick Quinn,' the harbourer of Power the bushranger, charged with wounding a constable, was found guilty and received a sentenced of three years' imprisonment.— Herr Bandmann is announced to appear at the Hayrnarket Theatre on Saturday, under the patronage of the Duke of Edinburgh.—The Colonial Bank dividend is 8 per cent., and £7000 is carried forward.—Sugars at auction realised full rates ; flour sold by auction at £12 10s. 5 maize,'4s. October 18—The schooner Daphne was sold for £615. —George Lewis and Co., slapping agents and coal merchants, have assigned their estate; liabilities, .£16,000. — Tho number of horses entered for the various events for the V. R. C. Spring Meeting is much larger than last year. On the first day, for the Melbourne Stakes, there are 16 entries aa against 10 last year. The Hotham Handicap has the large entry of 34, being no less than 13 more than last year's entry. Ike Derby

The Raliway Stales, iy. while this race had only 5 entries last year. For the Melbourne Cup 34 horses remain. Thel i Sydney horses are very freely entered for the chief events, and should the weather not set in fine quickly, we must expect to see the lie's share of the prizes go to the sister colony. The total number of entries is 455, ; ; last entries being 339. For the Melbourne 1 Cup the books are filled about Lapdog, who wag backed yesterday to win a large sum at 100 to 4. Barbarian was wanted at 100 to 7 —the best price offered being 100 to 8. The Handicaps will appear on the 25th instant. October 21.—S..Nicholson, an attorney, ii committed for trial on a charge of stealing books. —The coach from Seymour was upset, and Judge Snayth was much injured. October 22. —The Bendigo Advertiser reporti the arrival of Sir William Manning at Sandhurst, en route to Eehuca.—Prince Alfred landed at half-past 5, and was received by the Governor and driven to Toorak. There was* good crowd, and some cheering.—Hatchell Brown, average adjuster, died suddenly.— Pleuro pneumonia has appeared in a mob of cattle crossing the Wahgunyah Bridge.— Markets quiet; maize, 4s. 3d.
