SYDNEY.
October 24. —On the 14th instant, a man named Davis, while in a fit, fell from a building at Newcastle, and was severely injured.— A telegram was received on Friday stating that the barque Summer Cloud bad been wrecked in Wreck Bay, all hands saved. —An old woman, Margeret Priestley, died of burns occasioned by her clothes getting ignited while she stood with her back to the fire.—His Excellency the Governor, on Saturday, returned to Sydney, afrer an official visit to Norfolk Island, in H M.S. Virago.—On Monday, Mr. Henry Parkes resigned the presidentship of the Council of Education, but retains his seat on the Board.— On Saturday, three persons were arrested at Adeloug on a charge of poisoning horses.—The examination in the insolvent estate of Uiame, Walker, and Co., was continued on Monday. —Captiiin Roberts, of the Esther, on the 6th instant, was drowned in the Manning River, going overboard during a drunken struggle with his mate.—The sent in the Senate of the Sydney University, vacated by rcas n of the dentil of tie Rev. W. Purves, was, on the 12th instant, unanimously conferred by Convocation on the Hon. John Hay.—On Wednesday, the Matrimonial Causes Bill was rejected in the Legislative Council by 10 to 4.—His Royal Highness Prince Alfred, on Wednesday, proceeded on a trip to Melbourne on board the steamer Lady Young.—Mr. Thomas Marsh, a farmer, of Mudgee, on the 11th, expired whilst engaged in preaching in the Wes'.eyan chapel. In a rifle match at Newinoton, on the 19th 5 the cadets of that college beat the marines of H. M. S. Galatea, but by three points only.—A meeting of Frenchmen and their friends was held in Sydney on Thursday,' to help the French wounded in the present war.—At Mitchell's Creek, on Saturday, the 15th, Edward Cabbarn, a miner, was dreadfull mutilated by a blast of powder, which exploded whilst he was tapping at the fuse.
