IMPORTANT NEWS FROM THE EAST COAST.
ENGAGE ATE NT BETWEEN" HAtXHAUS AND FKIE^NDLIES. TWO FBIKKDLrKS SEVERELY WOUNDED. EUEOPEVNS IQTrIE BELIEF OF THE BESIEGEO. OtTR correspondent at Poverty Bay, in a letter fo warded by the Comcrang, stated that affairs in that district were very unsettled, and that in consequence of reports to hand from friendly natives, stating that the Hnuhaus had been seen in the vk-inity, the settlers were on their guard both night and day. It would appear from tho intelligence received by the s.s. Keera, which arrived in harbour from Poverty Bay yesterday, that there was some good ground for tho reports. Captain Bain informs us that on Tuesday last, 26th .inst., a party of Hauhaus came clown to Tologa Bay, and surprised two friendly natives, who were on guard. Both of the natives wei'a shot and badly mmn-'ed, but were taken into tho pa by some of their people. The fricndlies were evidently not prepared, and the enemy succeeded in takmg with them a number of prisoners, including a native family named Peka. The news was received in Poverty Bay tho same evening, and by daybreak, the following morning, . Major Wet-trupp and Captain Richardson, together with about forty liuropeans and natives, started off for Tologa, to the relief of the besieged. We shall, no doubt, receive particulars oi the expedition shortly.
