SUPREME COURT. — Criminal Sittings.
TUESDAY, JCJNE 14.
(Before Hia Honor Sir Q-. A. Arney, Cbref
Justice, and a Petty Jury.)
His Honor took his seat on the Bench at 10 o'clock.
John Stevens, better known as " Little Jack" was arraigned upon an indictment charging him with, feloniously breaking and entering the warehouse of Messrs. Cruickshank and Smart, on the sth of February last, and stealing therefrom two hundred weight of tobacco.
The evidence in this case was fully published upon the trial of a man named Rowley, who was charged with being concerned in the robbery, but was acquitted. The facts are very short, but the dealing with the stolen property embraced very voluminous evidence. It appeared that on Sunday, the 6th, the bonded store of Messrs. Cruickshank was found open. It had been safely locked on the previous day at two o'clock. It was found upon examination that several of the goods stored were disturbed. Eight boxes of tobacco were taken away. The brands were known us " Indian Hunter" and " Crystals." There was no tobacco of that quality in the Auckland market. It was traced to the possession of Rowley, who sold it to a grocer in Shortland-street. It now appeared that the prisoner sold the tobacco to Rowley. That portions of the tobacco were sold to other tradespeople in the town.
The case had not concluded when our reporter left.
