EVENING NEWSPAPERS IN NEW ZEALAND.
We extract the following from a late number of the Ballarat Star : —
" One of the peculiar features of New Zealand journalism is the large number of evening newspapers which are published in the towns and cities of the sea-boards of both Islands. These are very ably edited, and contain no small amount of smart writing. Many of the articles are pungently written, whilst local aud general reading matter is well condensed, and collated. These journals show evidence of being in the hands of experienced newspaper men, and are no doubt extensively read and circulated as they are sold at a very low price. Evening newspapers are so far useful inasmuch that they discount the news and general topics of the hour before such appear in the morning journals of the following day. Why evening papers have not succeeded in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, and other parts of Australia, is owing to the fact that very little information of importance is obtainable until long after the hour an evening journal is distributed for the public to read. It is said, and we believe the statement likely to be true, that tbe evening papers published in New Zealand supersede to a great extent the legitimate morning issues. Evening newspapers are read in the homes of the people, while morning papers only have a limited circulation among commercial men, who, as a matter of interest to themselves, read both."
