AKAROA SAILING AND POWER BOAT CLUB
OFFICIAL OPENING OF SEASON Twelve iachts Start in First Race Twelve yachts started in the first race of the season of the Akaroa Sailing and Power Boat club on Sunday. There are several additions to the fleet this season including the "Fonga" thj Sanders cup type boat and all the yachts have undergone j repairs and painting for the season's sailing and many had new sets of sails. The scene as they left Daly's wharf recalled days when, sailing on Akaroa harbour was a flourishing sport, but
in those days keel boats were in use
and they did not carry the striking colours of these smaller craft of the
idle-along class. One feature of the
present day craft is that they take
export sailing and the owners and crews are showing considerable improvement in handling their boat's after last reason's experience. The "Fonga" jus; beat the "Zephyr" home on Sunday and the "Sea Pup" was
only a few seconds behind. The steady
north easterly breeze made a fas-
race of it. In the fivst round the "Zephyr" and 'S'ea Pup" beat the
'Tonga" ro uid the buoy. The "Sea Fup" won the race and the "Rascal"
was second, and the "Zephyr" third
