Official Opening Ceremony

The official opening ceremony was performed by the Mayor, Mr F. Davis, at the boatshed at Daly's wharf. He said sailing was a good clean sport which had commended itself to the youths of Akaroa and surrounding district and the weekly races brought people together on land as well as on set. He referred to the increased interest in the club's activities and said twelve boats were taking part this year compared with four or five at the opening last year. He said he would like to urge on the boys sailing the very real necessity of wearing life jackets and not taking undue risks while sailing. They did not want an accident to happen as it would give the club a big set back. Yachting inculcated seamanship and they did not know when this knowledge might be required for defence purposes. He declared the season open and said he was sure great interest would be taken in the season's racing.

Mr L. J. Vangioni thanked the Mayor for declaring the season open and said as a precautionary measure a launch would be available while races were in progress in case of an accident. The lady supporters of the club then dispensed tea to the large number present.
