The three groups were each headed by a Friesian herd . while the highest cow tested by the Association for the season was the .five-year-old pedigree Friesian, Glen, hope Queen Echo ,Jewel f!; owned by C. W. Humm and Sons, Wainui, Banks Peninsula with 193501b milt, and 672 lb fat in 321 days while her dam, Rose : vale Echo Posch Jewel headed the Canterbury Association for the 193738 season with 196201 m milk and 680 lb fat in 350 days—a remarkable, similarity, in production-and a great performance for a dam and daughter. The- Friesian herds which headed the Groups of the Association were as follows: Plains: gj'Oups" H- J.' Macartney; 40 cows; 122481b milk; 4311b fat; 288 days. Peninsula Group: C. W. Outstanding Grade Fnesians The top herd of the Canterbury Herd Testing Association for the past season, the grade Friesian herd owned by H. J. Macartney at Tai Tapu, is one of the outstanding and most consistent dairy herds in the Dominion. During the past four seasons this, herd of 40 cows has averaged 3601b fat (1935-36), 4071b (1936-57), 3681b (1937-38) and 4311b (1938-39). The latter average is one one that has seldom been equalled by" any other Group Herd Test in N.'Z.'A particularly pleasing feature of the performance of Mr Macartney's herd is fact that every cow was bred on the fatfm. During the 1938-39 season seven cows in the herd produced'over $00 lb fat the highest producers being :a six-year-old cow which yielded 15tf>0 lb milk'knd 563 lb fat f in 319 days." Mr Macartney has for many 'years been using pedigree Friesian/hej-ij-s;res included among them beirig"thr£e "Lenslea" bulls, all'son's of'Colintoii C.O.R 640' lb fat (bred by:L.
