Not Evacuation This Time.—The advent of over 200 women to Darfield yesterday to attend the half-yearly meeting of the Canterbury Womens' Institute surprised many Darfield residents and the evacuation quetion being so much in people's minds, a number thought that the city of Christchurch was being evacuated. They were relieved to find that all was well and there was nothing more serious than a Federation meeting.

Emergency Precautions Scheme.— The Akaroa County Council at its monthly meeting yesterday received a letter from the Department of Internal Affairs in regard to the emergency precautions scheme, thanking the council for report of the action taken. Cooperation with Akaroa Borough was considered sound, also the idea to set up small committees in each Bay. This idea, the letter said, should work well in practice.

Military Service Concessions.— The Akaroa County Council yesterday received a letter from the N.Z. Counties Association making suggestions for the provision of County Council officers and regular employees on Military service. A joint meeting of representatives of the Municipal and N.Z. Counties Association recommended that normal annual leave of officers and employees should be continued and continue to accrue and could be taken as leave on their discharge from the forces. Payment for leave should be at the civilian rate of pay of the soldier. In the event of death an equivalent payment would be paid to deceased's dependants. Also it was suggested superannuation and National Provident contributions of employees should be paid by the local body in cases where a superannuation was in force. It was decided not to take any action in the meantime.

Table Tennis Meeting.—Considerable disappointment was expressed by promoters of an Akaroa table tennis club who had arranged a meeting at the Fire Brigade station on Tuesday evening when they found the building occupied by the first aid class, as no notice had been given them that the first aid class had changed its night from Monday to Tuesday. The Meeting to form the club will be held at a later date.
