Chess and Draughts Evening The Physical and Cultural Recreations events were brought to a successful conclusion on Thursday evening by a Chess and Draughts contest. An unusual feature of the evening was a simultaneous display of chess by Mr Sam Hollander against all comers. Playing ten opponents he finished with the good score of nine wins and one loss. It is probably the first time that a display such as this has been seen on the Peninsula and a large audience of spectators and players were very | interested. Mr W. W. Reid was responsible for the only loss of the evening and was congratulated by Mr Hollander.
Time was a feature of the display the 10 games being completed in li hours which is unusually fast play.
Mr Hollander then conducted a lightening tournament in which playeres had to make their moves every ten seconds. This innovation was also very much enjoyed arid resulted in Mr Arnold winning from Archdeacon Petric. A draughts competition was also held and resulted in Mr A. M. Helps winning from Mr J. G. Tlaylock. The evening* pi oved a great success and thanks wen due to the Canterbury Chess Club who kindly lent ten sets of men for the event. Mr Hollander, who is President of the Canterbury Chess Club has proved himself a very keen supporter of various spoits and we can look forward to many successful and enjoyable chess and draught evenings next year. Arrangements will be made to teach those who may be interested to learn.
