, AKAROA BOROUGH'S , RESPONSIBILITY I I# The question of the Akaroa'Boroflfeh Council's responsibility in reference to the Green Point Monument was discussed at length at Wednesday's meeting and though the matter-was adjourned pending the visit of the Secretary of the Centennial arid" the Secretary of the Historical committee to Akaroa on Saturday (tomorrow) the Councillors as a whole agreed that the Monument was a very important matter for Akaroa residents and they owed some responsibility in the upkeep and maintenance of the plot round the''Memorial. The Mayor said the Under-Secre-tary of Internal Affairs on his recent visit stated that the Akaroa residents should look, after the Monument arid he spoke severely about the neglected condition of the grounds. The Department were willing to put th'te approach and surrounding land in order and he considered it would be necessary for the Council to look after the Monument. Councillor Bruce said that the. Akaroa> County Council would probably assist with the upkeep. Councillor Longden: said he would like to see the Monument vested en-, tirely in: the Borough, as the Borough people were most interested in it. Councillor Whelch said the.. Borougli wanted to be careful about taking: over the responsibility. Councillor Longden referred to the interest of visitors in the Monument-. Councillor Petrie said that;he<woulit like to see the matter shelved to allow the Mayor to make some enquiries. | The Mayor said they could discuss • the matter with the visiting secre- ' taries on.
