VISIT OF AVON CYCLING CLUB 6 Akaroa Boating Club Opening The annual cycling race from Christchurch to Akaroa and back, organised by the Avon Cycling Club, the opening of the Banks Peninsula Cricket Association's Competition matches on Saturday and the opening of the Akaroa Boating Club's rowing season on Monday will make a busy week-end for Akaroa for tne Laboui Day week-end. The annual cycling race, wnich war inaugurated last year, is gaming in popularity and the Avon Cycling Club have received good entries foi this event for which they have pro vided a generous prize list. Th' cyclists will race to Akaroa to-morro\ and return on Monday. The Akaroa Progress Association has arranged a dance to entertaii them on Saturday night and a picnic at Wainui on Sunday. The Avoi Cycling Club have also organised i week-end excursion to Akaroa ir conjunction with the New Zealanc Railways, which, we understand, wil. be well patronised. Boating Club Opening The Akaroa Boating Club will hole its opening of the season on Monday The present year is a momentous on; for the Club, being the fiftieth anniversary, and with the prospect of th( championship regatta being- held here next February, the Club's operations during the present season will be watched with more than usual interest. The local club has a record to be proud of and is fortunate in having ar ideal sheet of water to train on. It has a strong team of oarsmen, who : if they train consistently, shoulel makf| their jubilee season one to look back upon with some pride. The New Zealand Rowing Association will meet on November 5 to decide where the championship regatta will be held. As reported previously, the Akarof Regatta Club have submitted a programme of championship and othei events and are offering £212 in prize money. They have received generous financial support all over the district There is every prospect that the New Zealand Championships will be granted to Akaroa, as it is 30 years since they were rowed in Canterbury, in 1906, when the Christchurch Exhibition was held. |
