SHOTS FROM THE SIDELINE
[By DROPKICK.] While I am permitted to contribute lotes on the laws of Rugby I say lefinitely that I will not be drawn nto any controversy on the subject. ?ls the laws of Rugby are entirely a natter of interpretation and there is l vast difference between reading the aws and applying their interpretaion, unfortunately Rugby at present s ruled too much to the book, and n'ore combination of the spirit with he rules would make for better footlall for all. ♦♦ ♦> ♦V 4 ♦ w In my last notes I made reference o offside players outside the ten yard imit, and repeat so long as the player [oes not get within ten yards of his ipponent before that player gets >ossession of the ball the first player lecomes automatically onside and hould not be penalised. ♦V ♦> ♦> When I took up refereeing 17 years tgo I was taught that there was a lifference between a "tackled" player tnd a "tackled" ball, and up to the >resent have seen no reason why I ihould alter my views on the matter low as it is on the playing field when he rulings have to be put into operition, we all make mistakes as refugees, but naturally the referee that nakes the least mistakes makes the >est referee. ♦> ♦> ♦V ♦> t> In a seven-a-side if at the end of ;wo spells both teams are equal, the procedure in starting the extra spell s a scrum halfway in the centre of ;he field, if a kick off is allowed one ;ide gains an unfair advantage. 4A #> V ♦V ♦♦ ♦♦ This year's seven-a-side produced some good play, both by the school Doys and senior and all will agree it was an ideal day's sport. ♦> ♦V ♦♦ ♦♦ I would like to congratulate Akaroa Convent boys on their play although beaten in the final they were far from disgraced. ♦> «« ♦V ♦> ♦> The Sub-union are to be congratulated for taking up the matter of football for boys 15 and under and nothing but good can result. » :•? Naturally with the selection of the Peninsula team, someone will be bound to be disappointed but that always happens, it only requires the eight forwards to do their part in the set scrums and I feel sure' the backs will do their part alright. v V t ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦* j Roy Barclay may have been a trifle unlucky in not securing a place in the team, no doubt he is an object lesson in fitness and goes from whistle to whistle. J'J ♦ ♦ ♦♦ It must be said of selectors Tikao and Masefield that they have not missed many matches and the subunion is fortunate in having two such' keen enthusiasts, we will all hope for their sakes that, the team acquits itself weli on July 4th. m « v* Akaroa seniors are moulding into a good side and will take a lot of beating from now on.
