'LAYING FOUNDATION STONE OF i MEMORIAL. 'I - i A meeting of the Peninsula War Memorial. Society was held on Friday j evening, Mr G. Armstrong'presiding over a fair attendance. j The Hon. Sec. Mr }.?. W. Shepherd, reported that after paying for the ground and having the ground put in order the Society had a credit ' balance of about S2OO. He also reported that he had communicated ' .with the Chief Postmaster/Christ-/ church re shifting back ti.e fence to conform with the fence that the Society intended erecting and the Borough Council along their frontage 1
Tho Chief Postmaster had visited' Akaroa and had approved of the] fence being shifted back making the footpath 3ft Gin .wider- . "I | This was considered very satisfactory. The Chairman said it seemed apparent that His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales would not visit Akaroa. It was decided to forward the petition of French settlers' decendants and others to His Royal Highness praying that he. or his deputy Admiral Halscy should lay the foundation stone of the memorial. •' Prices and sizes of various Ncav Zealand stones, suitably engraved, were discussed but nothing' definite was decided upon. The question of where the foundation stone should be laid was also fully discussed and it was resolved that this matter should be held over pending an inspection of the memorial ground. A vole of thanks to the Chairman terminated the meeting. ' MEETING AT LITTLE AKALOA. A public meeting of those.interested in the Peninsula War Memorial Monument was held at Little Akaloa i in th 2 schoolroom on Thursday even- \ ing 4th inst. There were present from Akaroa Misses N. Le Lievre, B. Jacobson, Armstrong, Messrs Barnham, Vangioni, Lswitt and ArmstrongThere was a fair attendance from 'the Day. Mr R. Gilbert was in the ) chair. After the various visitors had { spoken on the same lines as they had 'spoken elsewhere, Mr F. Hunter moved that "this meeting is thoroughly ,in accord with the views expressed , by'the speakers to have one monil- ( iment erected so that all the Peninsula mens' names can be placed on ;it." Seconded by Miss Philpot and jcairied unanimously. The Chairman 'said he was sorry there was not a larger audience present but as they \vere all busy with grass seeding that accounted for not having a large 1 attendance. He said they could rest assured that the Bay would be canvassed for subscriptions; but as they could not help much with the stalls , they would give their donation in cash. On behalf of those present and. residents he wished to thank the: visitors for coming over and discus-j sing the erection of the monument with them. After a vote to the chair a very enthusiastic meeting ended. I \
