AKAROA DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.
A committee meeting was held on Tuesday evening ; present—Messrs J. R. Newton (chairman), D. Fyfe, A. R. Munro, J. S.Dodds, T. Penlington. Rev. J. W. Hayward sent an apology for his absence.
The minutes of the previous meet ing were read and confirmed.
The acting-secretary of the North Canterbury Board of Education wrote, saying that it was reported the new school ground wag being grazed by horses, and asking the local committee to guard the interests of the Board re trespassing of stock.
The chairman said he had seen the ranger immediately, and authorised him to impound stock grazing on the sectiou, and to charge driving foes to the owner of the stock.
A circular re insuring the schoo building when let for pictures, dances etc, was received.
Accounts—T. Penlington 10a 6d, J, Vangioni £2 lg—were passed for payment.
A statement was received of amount £10 17s 6d from Board of Education for incidental expenses.
The chairman said he bad let the wood cutting to Mr S. Lelievre, and had paid him with his own money. It was resolved the chairman be refunded the amount,
The headmaster's report re attendance ivas as follows :—Average roll for August 69 boys, 67 girls, average attendance 68 boys, 61 girls ; average roll for September 69 boys, 68 girls, average attendance 61 boys, 60 girls. The bead master reported there were only two children over seven whose attendances were unsatisfactory. Mr Penlington moved that, if the children's attendances were not better, the attendance report be obtained from Mr ('. Hall, and sent on to the truant officer in a fortnight's time.
Seconded by Mr Fyfe, and carried. Mr Leete reported he and Mr Fyfe bad inspected the school ground, and had windows mended where they were out. They noticed that the Californian thistle was showing up in the ground. It came from the post office ground, and be understood the postmaster bad written to bis department about it. He added that the head-

In nns\vt--r to Mr Munro, the chairman wd all be knew about the pio gresg of tbe npw school was a letter shown to him Ly Mr G. Armstrong re power of High School Board *o use money for the erection of a secondary department. Mr Rhodes said in the letter it could not be done, but Mr Armstrong thought that the Government did not understand the position thoroughly, and another letter was being sent to Mr Rhodes, putting the positioa more clearly in front of those interested. The chairman added that when he was in Christchurch he saw the new plans for the four rooms, including the High School section, and he was informed that the Board was only delaying till the matter of tbe proposed grant from the High School Board was fixed up.
The Mayor, who came into the rrora at this point, corroborated the chairman's remarks re Hon. R. H, Rhndes's letter.
The meeting then terminated.
