PROPOSED NEW COUNTY.
TO THE EDITOR. Bir.—Though I am tuppcsed to be guided by a Mephistopheles and my remarks are Eilly, when compared with \our oorrefpondent of Tuesday last, yet at the risk of being dubbed a fool, and also with a view of ec quiring information, I will again, wirh ynir permission, trespass on your space. If the County road "is already defined and the Council had to aeeume control," f would wish to learn why that body did not. take charge of the entire length, even of the part Gazetted "as County road " (although at the time the length was measured off for that purpose) ; but they control over five miles less. The reaeon was obvious, the came patriotism for their pet riding still actuates them,
The absolutely necessary rxpenditure r<? poi ted as required when taking over the road, does not (considering the milage) so enormous, especially haviDg regard to the fact (hat it was about to ba "swept by n new broom ;" but this is ancient history.
Relative to the mee'incr of ratepayers at Duvauchelle's, refer'e>l to hv m', the qnefltion ehould not he whfther I fnibscriho to a certain p«per. but wlie her I ho resolution tUt the " Parent" County should be split up into three, was or wah ut>t rani?d. Mr Lftlievre ftales th<u 20 miles of Rummit >oad nquiro metalline and this Riding should help, nnt.wi'hi>t»ndirg that all the road on' l"t of P' nintuk must be through Life Rivs'. n-'l Mir. ly if the ratepayers are willing to iminUiu this for the benefit of the CouMy at Inrcp, one would imagine they are liheml md ed ; but when it ie exjeoted (hut they are also to contribute to roa's in other Bays, there is very little difficulty t<> sfe how the scales of justice hang, and also why Mr Bruce and hie friends B.:e bo bate oveTV.he proposed severance. To euin up, ajTiL-ftparfc from all side ieeues, nothing feenis fawc-r than if a section of the iatep*S(rrs r?r<.h« to its business in it? owfi « ay > ii 1 t«av fnrs, why thoir nfiigh bours should per iet in having the work done their way and i" ot iX[>s Jp* itI huve to at the same time, i hank you allowed. —I am, etc.
