WELLINGTON EXHIBITION.
0 This Exhibition was.opened on Monday. There waa an enormous attendy ance in spite ol rainy weather, and His s Excellency the Governor made .an-able s speech in performing the, opening cere--0 mony. Mr Brown, the. President ;Mr £ Fisher, tho Mayor (erstwhile of the t Lyttelton limes) ;'- the Hon. W. C. t Walker, and our friend, Mr H. B. Kirk, 2 also Christchurch men, be it remarked l ' made the other.speeches. The-exhibi--1 tion ia an excellent one. At a musical • festival in connection with tha opening, 8 the principal produc'ion waa the cantata 5 « Hinemoa,". a Maori legend, for soli, t chorus and-orchestra, written by Mr t Arthur H. Adams of the Evening Post a literary staff, younger brother of the r gentleman who espoused. Miss Jacobson I on! Wednesday, and composed and con--5 ducted by Mr Alfred Hill. The princi- . pal characters were taken by Madame 1 Eveleen Carlton (soprano), Mr Harry { Smith of Duridin (baritone), Mr John > W;'. Hill (tenor) and Mr Harold Widdop '- (bjsa), the chorus being Mr Maugban T Barnett's Musisal Society of about 200r } The cantata proved to be full of beau'iful.", \ -lire, the solos being especially graceful. ; r The choral parts are singularly beautiful, 5 he whole work being very richly orches* \ /rated. The words of the libretto lent \ i.hemaelves : especially 1 to the beautiful - nusic, and nothing more, original or »-., striking in the region of. choral music,. Hajs been heard here for-some time than ' 'he baka or war dance effect. Tbefinal '- >'-hprus was particularly splendid. The '■. ' work was enthusiastically received, and Mr Hill loudly cheered.
