FOOTBALL.

Re the Peninsula Representative team, we bave received thn following letters :— ;

To the Editor.

Sir, —There is no doubt the Selection OommittPß bad n.hnrd task in choosing the Peninsulua Representative le*m, nnd 1 qm'te agree with your correspondent Forward" that Smith's inclusion wa« it)deed a snrpri-n, perhaps aven to that sent'eman himself. Your co-respondent'" stricrnres re Smith's pugilistic powers were none fo severe, ns witness bin behaviour in Le Bon'p-Little River match played here recently. I am at one with your correspondent tb it Vangioni shou'd have been cho«en in the first place, but consider his insinuation against J. Thacker qnito uncalled for. and am of opinion them is no gentleman in the po suitable for the position of captain as he. After all per haps it is but a matter of individual opinion.—Yourß, &c,

Onlooker.

To the Editor.

Sir, —T was surprised to pee in' your last week's insue a Ht'er criticising the Peninsula representative team roi'tee. The writer baa charged one momher with mdng his authority to obtain a place in the te*m» and also electing him(.elf captain. This is not correct., When the matter re captain was brought up on Saturday night. Mr; Thack»r proposed tbat the mattar be beld over till the team wan on tbe field of play. Tlie other members of the Comiiiitteo we-e &d verse,- he majority ruled, and Mr Trmck*r was elected Captain. He also ridicules the Commit p c for not picking N-irbey. This would be impossible, as up to the time tne team was picked he bod never donned the ]9rsey this peason, and the. Committee could b"rdly pick him on his 1895 form. Your correspondent seems to think that Vangioni is the only tmn in tbe team worthy of his place, and that Smi'h. the Le Bon's man. is only good at fiehting. Any judge of football knows that Smith is a pood nrißn. being fast, a very clever and dodgy runner, a fine place kick and a good lacker. It would be impossible to pick a representative team without his inclu • sion. R. T. Corsbie.

To the Editor

Sir.—l see by tbe Football notss in Friday* issne of your valuable paper that • Forward ' is reuch exercised concerning tbe personnel of tbe Peninsula team. In fact, according tn bis account the whole settlement hsd thiown off thfir well-known sleepiness to find tint Okain's whom they considered in a hole, had come out on top—a position they will also in all probability hold nt tbe end of )h" Cop matches notwithstanding tbe flute-blowing; of • Forwtird, 1 who pUces Ok»in's third on the %t, when in rartlity they are at prpsei't second (pqii*! wit'i Wairewa and Liit c Akaloa). ' Forward ' blames the Committee for picking themselves and one member (Mr Thacker) with using his posbion to elect himself Captain. This I find, i» quite incorrect, as Mr Thacker wisned the pppointment of C»pt*in left to the tiara. ' Forward ' also thinks J. Thacker's place could have been filled to advantage by Narbey ; so, pertnps. it oonld bave been by Moriirty, but as neither of them has played for his Clnh this year it would be ridiculous to pick thf-m on their reputation. ' Forward ' thinks Wight the only fit man to captain thetsam. Any impartial judge haa only to wßtob the Akaroa and Okain's teams on and off tbe ground to see which captain, Wight or Thacker. bas *">e most cnn'rol of his mem With regard t-> Smith, • Forward"s aro chilflisb, as. pugilistic or otherwise, Vangioni cannot be compared to bim. He is a grand placekijk. a fast, dodgy runner, and, bar Tripe and P. Mora, the hmt collarer on the Peninsula. Hoping • Forward' is not so much cut as he thinks, and that when nest he appears in print he will confine himself io fads, and thanking you for your space.—Youis. &<?., Bill Mustard-Pot.
