Criminal sittings, Supreme Court, today. George Howard was sentenced to eighteen months for forging and uttering. John Hennington to twelve months for unlawfully wounding Samuel Bamford at Lyttelton. George Whitfield, for stealing letters, and Louis Spedding and Henry Campbell for larceny of bicycles pleaded guilty, and will be sentenced to-day.
London, August 7
Sir C, E. Ewaii Smith denies the bombastic action attributed to him at Fez. He denies a dispute with the Sultan, and expresses annoyance at the invention of the reporters, of whose presence he was unaware. Negotiations respecting the treaty are being continued, and the commissioner is confident of ultimate success.
It is stated that it was Mr Gladstone, who, wishing Mr Blake's assistance in drawing up the details of Home Rule, invited him to enter Parliament, and endeavour to rally the Irish Party to a common standard. A Unionist will oppose Mr Morley's re-election. No opposition was offered at Mr Davitt's taking the oaths and his seat. St. Petebsbukg,, August 7. Twelve hundred fresh cases of cholera and 550 deaths are reported since Aug. 2nd at Rostov aad Nakehwau, in the Don district, and official bulletins report that since August Ist there have been 6100 seizures throughout Russia, and over 2000 deaths. The cholera is increasing in Poland, and a violent outbreak has occurred in Teheran, the capital of Persia. Sydsey, Aug. 8. The Board of Health has resumed the issuing of clean bills of health to sea-going vessels. Intelligence from the Caroline Islands states that the Spanish troops have suffered heavy reverses at the hands of the natives. An attempt to land parties from four gunboats at Ponape was unsuccessful, the movement being attended with great loss of life. It is said that the missionaries are largely to blame for the disaffection of the natives. Melbourne, Aug. 8. In reply to a question from the authorities, th.it the next conference of stock inspectors should be at Wellington, Mr Shiels says ho does not see any necessity for a conference. Perth, Aug. 8. A desperate encounter took place between the natives and the police, who were endeavouring to capture the murderers of Allen Henry, in June last. The ringleader and many other natives were shot, one prisoner was captured, and one policeman was sppared.
