POLITICAL.

[By Telegraph.] It is understood ia well informed 'political circles that there will be a larger majority against the female franchise in the Legislative Council than there was last year, The Cabinet decided to-day to give facilities for the consideration of Mr Palmer's motion to set up a Select Committee to consider the rival routes, but will take no action in the matter as a Ministry. The evidence given before the Industries Committee by the Chief Commissioner showed that railway rates on produce in New Zealand compared favorably with thoso of other colonies. It is understood that th.3 Committee make recommendations as to tariff after they have heard evidence, when their recommendations will be considered by the Commissioners. I am given to understand that Mr Withers, the Government surveyor who was sent to Akaroa to report upon Red House Bay, has reported adversely to the scheme suggested by your Borough Council. A Committee ot the Houss will report that the Government should favourably consider the question of reciprocity with Australia.
