USE OF PLYWOOD
Plywood lias been found suitable for use in many forms of construction work, and, now that the wartime control on its supply has been revoked, it is likely to have a wider commercial l use than before the war. During the wor most of our supplies of plywood were used to make hutments for our Allies and our own servicemen in the Pacific, and for the construction of military buildings in New Zealand. A great deal was exported to Australia for use in hospital and camp construction there. The two kinds of plywood made in I\ew Zealand are known as resin-bon-ded and casein-bonded. The resin-bon-ded plywood is made with an artificial resin glue which retains its adhesive properties under severe weather conditions. Tests made by the N.Z. Forest Service have shown that this plywood may be used for the exterior of houses and buildings. It may also be used i ll •bus trailer body construction, in casing for concrete, and in boat and ship building. Casein-bonded plywood—made with casein glue—is better known, and has been widely used in the making of furniture, door panels, and for other interior work. New Zealand hardwods such as tawa. taraire and rewarewa can provide attractive veneers for the. outer surfaces of plywood, and are talking the place of oak, ash and silky oaik for panelling and furniture. The three factories producing plywood in New Zealand are able to maintain supplies sufficient to meet general needs.
