Dr David Miller, of the Cawtliron Institute, Nelson, was in Alexandra over the week-end to inspect the area on which control of gorse is being carried out by the weevil—Apion ulicis. These weevils were liberated in February last on the property of Mr !P. S. Brent, Manuherikia, and were found to have survived and are now breeding freely. The insect lays its eggs inside the young seed-pod, and the gorse seeds are destroyed by the larvae. A further consignment of 3000 was liberated on the property of Mr W. Noble, Galloway.
A visitor of interest to N.Z. ;it present is Professor L. D. Coffman, an accredited representative of the Carnegie foundation. Among the huge bequests to education left by Mr Andrew Carnegie was one of ten million dollars, the income of which is spent on various educational projects throughout the British dominions. The Home Science Faculty of Otago University was honoured by a grant from this fund for the purpose of extending its work into the rural districts of the Otago University area; and it is as a result of this grant that Home Science lecturers from time to time give lectures under the auspices of the Women's Division in our town. The last lecture 'for the current year was to take place on November 13, but owing to Professor Coffman 's visit, it has been postponed till the 20th., as Professor Strong very naturally wishes all the lecturers engaged in extension woik to be in Dunedin to meet Professor Coffman and discuss with him the different aspects and possibilities of their work with a view of having the grant renewed.
We acknowledge receipt of a sample of the "Charity" Stamps, which are to be placed on sale at all Post Offices in the Dominion as from Saturday last, in continuation of the anti-tuberculosis campaign commenced in 1929. On this occasion there are two denominations of "Charity" stamps—a 3d stamp (2d postage and Id charity) for letters and other articles on which postage of 2d is required, and a 2d stamp (Id postage and Id charity) for newspapers, Christmas cards, packets and other articles on which the postage is Id. The funds raised will be applied to the establishment of permanent bases throughout the Dominion for children's health camps... With the. funds subscribed during the efforts of the two previous years, the erection of the lirst camp has been commenced; and it is hoped that it will be used early in 1932. The opinion is definitely held by medical authorities that many children who are contacts of tuberculosis in their own homes may be saved from contracting the disease if they are removed for a time to a health camp in the country. It is to help children whoso parents cannot afford to provide this protection from s the danger of infection that the appeal is made, and it is hoped that all members of the community will help to the best of their ability. The stamps will be on sale for a limited period—probably until the end of February next.
