THE HERALD WEDNESDAY, JUNE 19, 1929.

The report of the Mannherikia Babbit Board has been held over till next issue. Apparently Alexandra with its solid rock format ion country is the best place to live in when earthquakes are making themselves felt.. Mr Bodkin, M.P., advises that at the request of Mr S. A. ttevens he got in touch.with the Minister of Public, Works and asked that authority be issued for the construction of the 1 Mannherikia Eivcr bridge at Springvale. Mr Bodkin has now been advised that the authority has been issued to j the Vincent County Council. • ] At the auetion sale held on behalf of Mr E. J. Ilea at Chatto Creek on Tuesday there was a large number present from all parts of the district. Horses were bought for £4O, £SO and as high an £6O. Some of them went to Becks and one to Cattle Flat. The tractor was sold for £95 and the mower for £ls.

At the last meeting of the Borough Council the registration of vehicles ap-' plying for hire within the borough was discussed. Gr M'Kellar said that the drive re were covered by. a license of £7 10s. Constable Sorrell had asked that a further step should be taken, the licensing of vehicles for a sum of 10s eaeh. After discussion it was agreed to fall in with the constable's vish. All ears plying for hire will have * printed disc on the wind screen, with the registration mark and the number of the ear. We understand that tbere is a movement on foot to get the department to establish an automatic telephone exchange at some suitable centre and do away with the present system of telephone bureaus. The idea is to embrace the whole of Otago Central including i the districts of Omakau, Lauder, Pool- % hum, Moa Creek, Fruit lands, Alexandra, Springvale, Galloway, Earnscleugn, Clyde and Cromwell. The suggestion appears to be a good one and if approved will do away with the objectionable toll charges and besides it would mean a continuous service all day and all night (Sundays included),.
