TEVIOT FRUITGROWERS ASSOCIATION.

The animal report of the Teviot Fruitgrowers Association reveals a remarkable activity and scope of usefulness to the members in the way of trading purchase*. During the past year the report showed purchases on behalf of the Association amounting to £1339. The largest items under this heading are : casings £2937, motor spirits £lB6, nails £ll2, bluestone £IOO, paper £202, arsenate of lead £143, lime sulphur £lO3, spraying oils £303. The previous year's purchases amounted to £2190, an increase for the past twelve mouths of £2149, practically double. The discount on these purchases amounted to £135. This might appear small in comparison with the amount of purchases, but it must be borne in mind the report) that those lines not shoring a discount have been bought for growers at a price far below market rates. In preseutiug the annual report the chairman Mr J. B. Gilmom) touching en this matter said : —The very large increase iu the purchases of the past year was evidence that as a co-operative purchasing society the Association was proving it>elf a mist important factor in the life of the industry locally, and the extensive use members were making of it and of the society was very pleasin" to the management committee. Quite recently, he pointed out, the extension of its buying facilities embraced a large purchase of oats aud chaff for members, and he predicted much larger operations in the years to cjme. In addition to the ordinary routine work of the committee, the cartage of member's fruit to railhead had been organised, effecting a saving to members participating, estimated at £I2OO. This interesting report is well worth the careful consideration of local orchardists, emphasising the fact that the fruitgrowing industry in this district is very far behind the Teviot district in mutual co-operation and organisation.
