OBITUARY.

We regret to record the death of Mr James Halpine, which took place suddenly at Oueenstowii early on Thursday morning, 28th April. The deceased, who was o4 years of age, was well known locally, having resided in Central Otago for very many years. Born in County Wichlow, he came to New Zealand when a lad of sixteen, lauding at Napier about the year 1873. He followed farming for a time, till the gold mining attracted him, as it did so many others, and he came seeking his fortune to Gabriels Gully. Later he was eugaged on sluicing claims at St Bathans and Matakauui. Leaving there he went to the West Coast and worked on the railway which was being put through at that time, but his steps were again directed back to Central Otago. Settling in Alexandra about 20 years ago, he found employment at various occupations, including building and coalmining. Leaving Alexandra a short time ago, he found employment at Nightcaps and not keeping well he was presumably making his way back to Alexandra when he was seized with a sudden attack in the hotel at Oueenstotvn which proved fatal. The body was brought home and interred in the local cemetery last Sunday. The deceased leaves a widow and family of two sous and two daughters to whom we extent our sincere sympathy.

The news of the death of Mr Roger Francis Finnerty, popularly known as '' Dick " Finnerty. which took place in the lavercargill Hospital last Wednesday, 27th April, came as a shock to Ills many local fiieuds and acquaintances. The deceased who was the son of Mr and Mis 11. Finnerty, of Bluff, suffered from indifferent health due to his war experiences. He enlisted with the Australian -Ith Contingent and was iuv.dided back to Australia from GaUipoii. On recovering, he again went on active service, serring with the Australians in Fiance where he remained until the Armistice was signed. He again met with misfortune, being severely gassed on the Western front, from which he never fully recovered. Dick was a keen bowler, enjoying the game to the full, the local green seeing a good deal of him. Of a bright and cheery disposition in spite of his infirmities. He left Alexandra about a fortnight ago and the news of his death came as a painful surprise to his brother bowlers. The deceased was brother to Mrs A. Richards and Miss, Finnerty, both of the Criterion Club Hotel, and to them and to his sorrowing parents and other relatives we extend our sincere sympathy.
