Across tlie hills, all bare and brown ; _ Across the mountains cold and xrhito, ,n, r ev sleot driving down, Hie bleak wind whistles through tho u tight, The sheep upon the barren land, All huddled, watch their weaklings die, And I, who cannot understand, Am asking, always asking, why p
And so upon the cold wet plain, The mark of Death is on the'day, Dumb creatures in their hopeless pain. Watch while their kind are swept away. They know not; Nature's hidden laws— They only know the world is so And I, who humbly seek the cause Can only stand and see them go !
Set might I, in my lowly life, Some suffering ease, some good perform, Share someone's burdeu in the strife, Protect some Wanderer from the storm! That when the worlds long, weary night Is ended, I may truly say I freely give my little light To help to make the brighter Day. Ct. Dkwah.
