Daffodil Social.
All the poetical things that have beon written or said about the daffodil surged into the mind as one entered the local town hall on Thursday evening last. Tiie occasion was a social to mark the wind-up of the football season, and the local club must have been actuated with a desire to give prominence of plaee to that ever popular bulbous plant that marked the name of the function. Narcissi were everywhere from the fragrant little jonquil to the large trumpet daffodil, all of which delighted the eye and brought joy to those who look upon the " yellow hue " as only a true lover of Nature can understand. ' It has been an exceptionally good spring for narcissi, but had the social been held a week earlier the daffodils would have been displayed in all their freshness and tender beauty. As it was, however, they survived the occasion of the. social sufficiently to suit their fair wearers and mark the silent progress of charming spring. The hall was tastefully decorated with green foliage, and the numerous white dresses worn by the ladies and decked with daffodils bore -a striking distinction to the merit of the social. A. special feature of the function was the excellent table supper, and an early inspect ion of this department revealed a valuable attraction to the gay bunting. Daffodils adorned the tables, which were strewn with savory dishes of trifles, fruit salid, jellies, and other articles of relishable diet. The refreshment room was festooned with green ami white streamers, and the whole garlanding was in keeping with the nature of the function. There was a decidedly large attendance, quite an influx of visitors being present from Clyde, Bald Hill Flat and the surrounding districts, the Bald Hill members of the club attending en masse. Dancing was kept merrily going till an early hour to excellent music supplied by Mrs M'Glashau (piano), and Messrs W. Briugans (cornet) and 11. Partridge (violin), whilst Mr J. Richardson fulfilled the duties of M.C. During the eveuing Mr Cahill delivered a rather humorous address, in which he pictured the Alexandra Club in the eyes of ungainly critics as compared with the large gathering of friends and wellwishers that evening. Sustained and -well-directed effort is usually attended by success, and that is the explanation of the uniformly good results achieved by the energetic and obliging secretary of the club (Mr I'. Gordon), who was ably assisted by lady friends, flaying a lone hand, the entire success of the function was solely due to Mr Gordon, whose feelings must have been gratified at the outcome of his advocacy and untiring efforts. The catering was douo, by tho numerous lady supporters, and we are asked to express the hearty appreciation of the footballers for the assistance rendered by the ladies in this direction. Quite a substantial sum has been placed to the credit of the club from the proceeds of the social.
