Sad Accident at Omakau.
A sad accident occurred, at Omakau (writes our correspondent)' on Wednesday uight last shortly after the arrival of the 9.40 p.m. train. . The engine .was being shunted to the engine shed, -whan a young man named John Eagle, postal cadet attached to the railway station at Otnakau, who was assisting in the shunting work, accidentally fell underneath the engine, with the result that his left leg was practically severed just above ■the ankle* First aid was immediately rendered by Mr Montgomery, railway porter at Alexandra, who had arrived by t.ie train. Br Bagley, of St, Bathaus, was telephoned for and arrived per motor car in remarkably short time. The young sufferer, who bore his accident bravely, was taken to Itaufurly by special train and thence to Naseby by trap, arriving at the hospital at 3 a.m. The leg was amputated immediately on arrival, and latest advices are "to the effect that young Eagle is doing well. lie was a most popular and obliging officer, and the accident cast quite a gloom over the place. Mr Isherwood, stationmaster, was indisposed at the time of the accident, ami a relieving officer had jus J; arrived by the late train. The victim of the accident, who is a native of St. Bathaus, kept remarkably cool, and while waiting for the arrival of the doctor sat up and conversed in a manner that was surprising to those present. Much sympathy is felt for the lad in ln's distressing accident.
