At the declaration of the poll at Gore on polling night the Hod. R M'Nab made a manly speech. He said : If anything would tone down the sorrows of defeat it was the manly handsome way in which Mr Anderson had borne the decision of the electors of Mataura. Throughout the contest Mr Anderson had proved an honorable and uptight opponent, and though at times he had taken exception to the methods adopted by others, he must repeat that he had uo occasion to take exception to the methods adopted by Mr Audersou.—(Cheers ) " Ladies ami gentlemdo," said Mr M'Nab, " you hare placed Mr Anderson at the top of the poll, and I.want to congratulate him upon the position that Lbe bulk of the electors have placed una in, and I want to assure him that I will strive to act as nonorably and fairly towards him as he proved to me during my term of office."—(Cheers ) Further, Mr M'Nab said he would do all in his power to make Mr Anderson familiar with local matters at present uuder consideration. He had only to command his services, and they would be at his disposal, " But, continued Mr M'Nab, amid laughter and cheers, **l want Mr Anderson to recognise and remember that that state of affairs will end when the next election takes place, and that then he must expect to find my support no longer avaiiablei but opposition existent in an honorable and upright manner." The ex-member concluded by stating that there was one privilege of all unsuccessful contestants, which was to call for three cheers for the victor.
