Borough Council.
The ordinary meeting of the Alexandra Borough Council was held on Monday evening last, when there were present;—Crs Spencer (deputy-mayor, in the chair) Schaumann, Appleton, Ryan, Buchanan, M'Math and Laidlaw. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. * Inward correspondence was read ae follows: —From the clerk, Vincent County Council, stating that one bushel of poisoned ground could be supplied to the Borough at a cost of £l. —From Mr R Hay, engineer, acknowledging receipt of cheque on account of commission, and stating that, with regard to the proposed cutting out of the pipe between Crookhaven and Ventry streets, he thought it " very advisable to have as few dead ends as possible, for several reasons." —From Mr R Gunion, notifying the Council that in accordance with the terms of his lease he ceased to be the lessee of the Borough Endowment as from the 31st ult. —From Mr J R Bartholomew, secretary of the Reserves Conservation Society, asking for payment of the subsidy voted by the Council, and stating that the amount collected by the Society amounted to over £25. —Notice of application by George Hastings for a residence site of threequarters of an acre, within the boundaries of the Borough, was read." —From MrsS Lewis, complaining of the alleged unwarranted action of the Borough poundkeeper in impounding horses belonging to her. The writer .'Complained that the poundkeeper had exceeded his duties on the occasion in question. The inward correspondence was re ceived and the outward approved.
A deputation of Chinamen waited on the Council, asking that the Chinese Camp should be connected with the water mains by means of an inch pipe. It was resolved that the Works Committee visit the ground, and report on the request of the deputation. It was resolved that* a bushel of poisoned grjain be ordered from the County Council. On the notion of Cr Ryan, seconded by Or Schaumann, it was resolved that applications be called for the lease of the Borough endowment for a term of one year. It was resolved that the Works Committee visit the residence area applied for by Mr Hastings, and that the matter be dealt with at next meeting of the Council. On the motion of Cr Laidlaw, seconded by Cr Buchanan, it was resolved that the subsidy applied for by the Reserves Conservation Society be paid, subject to satisfactory evidence re the Society's funds being produced to the Borough treasurer. After some discussion, regarding the desirability of pollarding the trees in the recreation reserve and at the lower end of the town, it was finally resolved that the Conservation Society be granted permission to pollard the trees at the foot of Tarbert-street, the trees to be cut at a height of not less than 15ft from the ground. Cr Appleton drew the Council's attention to the fact that the Cemetery was badly in need of repairs, and as there was a considerable amount standing to the credit of the Cemetery Account, he thought something should be done to improve the state of the grounds. He moved—That a man be employed to carry put , necessary repairs at the Cemetery The motion was seconded by Cr Schaumann and carried.
It was resolved, on the motion of Gr M'Matb/seconded by Or Laidlaw, that tenders be called for the fencing in of the intake reservoir, the Works Committee to draw up plans and specifications for the work. Some discussion took place in reference to Mrs Lewis's complaint, but no action was taken by the Council, it being understood that the poundkeeper proposed testing the matter in the court, It was resolved that in future the hour of meeting be 8 o'clock, instead of 7.30 as at present. Resolved—That Mr A. Brown be written to requesting that the fence erected by him across the road on the .mining reserve be removed immediately. The statement of balances showed a total debit balance of £133 0s 7d. The following accounts were passed for payment: —William Parker, £7 4s; W. Bowler, 8s; J. D. Thomson, 4s; A. A. Briasco, 10s; Lyon and Co,, £1 10s; R. M'Lean, £42 5s lOd; J. Young. £18; E. J. Terry, £24; J. M'Ewan, £2 14s. The Council then rose.
