Bannockburn.
(From our own correspondent). OBITUARY. Since last time I wrote to you, death has been amongst us. This time the victim was Mr John Thomas, son of Mr H. Thomas, of the Carrick Range Hotel. Deceased was 30 years old at the time of his death, and during the last seven or eight years of his life, had been a confirmed invalid, having contracted rheumatic fever, and that complaint affected bis heart, so much so, that his death was expected at any time. But though " Jack's " heart was affected, it was '• real British," and he managed to pull through many severe attacks, until the last one came, and he passad quietly away on the 7th inst. Jack was a genial kind hearted young man, and was greatly respected by the many, friends with whom he came in contact. To his sorrowing relations is extended the sincerest sympathy, for what, to them, is an irreparab'e loss. The funeral took place on the 10th inst, and was attended by a large concourse of people. The Rev, Mr Hosking officiated at the grave. ACCIDENT. Last Saturday morning, the wire rope over the river at Wilson's mine, snapped while a load of coal was being hauled across, and the chair and its contents were precipitated into the river. Fortunately, the men at the winches did not have hold of the handles at the time or a serious accident might have occurred. One of the men on the Junction Electric No. I, which is working about 200 yards below the chair, saw the accident occur, and he states that about five minutes afterwards four of the bags of coal from the chair came up in the buckets, which is an illustration of the enormous power of the river. It was thought that the accident would paralyse the coal trade from this pit, but Mr Gillanders, with commendable energy, had the rope out of the river very quickly, and at the present moment the accident is almost made good.
