LOOKING BACK

FIFTY YEARS SYNE < . v" : V ' " V-V - • (From the “Guardian,” Dec. 4, 1900). Latest Head-dress for Ladies—The latest hat for women is said to be a wonderful affair. It has no crown and is entirely without trimming. It resembles an‘ oval-shaped pancake, placed on the head perfectly flat, the back turned sharply in, the sides curved upwards a little —the whole rather resembling in shape a grocer’s sugar scoop. The material is gathered panne or velvet lined with gathered white satin.—Wireless Telegraphy: The “Daily Express” states that Signor Marconi has discovered means of controlling air waves, thus obviating the immensely lofty masts now employed by wireless telegraphy. He expects to be able to communicate from England to America in the near future.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

(From the “Guardian,” Dec. 4, 1925).

School Picnic—Over 1200 parents and pupils of the East Ashburton School travelled by ’special train this morning to Timaru, where the school picnic is being held. At Timaru hot water and milk is being supplied, and games and sports will be held on the beach. The special train conveying the picnickers home again will leave Timaru. at 6.15 p.m.
