NOT PULLING THEIR WEIGHT

BOWLING CLUBS IN N.Z, (P.A.) MASTERTON, This Day. Less than 50 of New Zealand’s 500 bowling clubs were puffing their weight in contributing to the Institute of Turf Culture in the Grasslands Division of the Department of Agriculture the president of the New Zealand Bowling Association, Mr W. Hadwin. told a meeting of Wairarapa bowlers in Masterton last night. If every club would contribute even £2 2s a year it would be possible to place two greens experts in the North Island and two in the South Island so that every club was visited four times a year, Mr Hadwin said. He added that though many other sports, including Rugby and cricket, reaped the benefit of the Turf Institutes work, the Golf and Bowling Associations were the only two to support it with contributions. . “It is the willing horse that carries the load,” Mr Hadwin said. “Ninety per cent, of bowlers sit back and let the others carry it.” . Mr Hadwin said he was going to ask for Is 6d levy for bowls’ administration. The present levy was bad business. Moneywas lost steadily in administering the association, and the Dominion tournament was relied on for a profit.” It is a ghastly thought that with the present levy we know before we start that we are going to lose by it.”
