TUCKER TROPHY
CLOSELY-DEBATED CONTEST "In the second elimination round of the Tucker Trophy debating contest conducted by the Ashburton County Debating Union last evening, two of the first round winding teams, Catholic Club and High School Old Boys. B team provided one of the most-evehly contested debates in the history of the competition. \ : \ Taking the affirmative on the subject:.; “That the introduction of OffCourse Betting is Detrimental to New Zealand,” the Catholic Club team, led by Mr T. Cleary with Mr J. Bradley as second speaker were awarded 159 points, with the H. 5.0.8. team, led by Mr F. Taylor and seconded by Mr D. Frew, were two points behind with 157 points. - ■' The judge (Mr W. B. Elwood) stated that the debate was the most closelycontested he had heard for many years; and remarked that the issue was in doubt until the reply. Mr Elwood 'Congratulated all speakers on their efforts, particularly with regard to grammar, which was very good. The Catholic Club team will now debate against the Toe H team in the final of the "debate on October 26, on which night impromptu and prepared speeches will be given. ThqTuatara Shield for -junior.speakers, .will be competed for to-morrow evening in the Catholic Club rooms, when in addition to two debates, there will be prepared and impromptu speeches. Entries have been received from; the Catholic Club, High School (holders of the trophy), and High School Old Boys’ A and B teams.
