CAUGHT TAKING BETS
| AUCKLAND WOMEN FINED (PA.) AUCKLAND, Oct. 17. Caught by the police taking racing bets over two telephones on Saturday afternoon at two rooms in the Southern Cross building, City, two married women were charged in the Magistrate’s Court to-day. Eisie Ethel Reed, aged 43, pleaded guilty to using premises as a common gaming house, and Abigail Gemmel, aged 29, admitted that she assisted Reed ' Senior-Detective Finlay said a total of £IOB9 had been taken in bets. The police took more than £52. volume was so great,” he said, “that Policewoman Orsulich could not cope with the two telephones.” Reed had been fined £3O on a similar charge in 1944. Gemmel was a first offender. Counsel for the defence asked the Court to consider the strong public demand for placing off-course bets, and that so far no other means existed.
Mr M.C. Astley, S.M., said that having regard to the extent of Reed’s business she would he fined £IOO. Gemmell was fined £25.
