APPLICATION REFUSED

CARRIAGE OF GOODS The applicant would be seriously handicapped if he was refused an extension of his licence, said Mr K. W. Walton, who appeared for Alexander Durham Cormack, of Carew, when making an application to the No. 3 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr W. G. Baird) in Timaru yesterday for an extension of vehicle authorities to allow access to Timaru for the carriage of general goods. Cormack operated in the Geraldine and Carew districts and had often been requested to take goods to Timaru and bring supplies on his return. At. present there was only one company on the run from Geraldine, and if he were successful in his application, Mr Walton said he would be able to give the Geraldine people additional option and also cater for his own clients in the Carew district. Opposing the application, Mr J. S. Haywood for the Geraldine Transport Company, Limited, said the firm had operated the Timaru-Geraldine run for a considerable time and maintained a daily service. Mr W. C. Crotty, man-aging-director of the company, gave evidence showing that the service provided by his firm was sufficient for the traffic offered. He said that a truck left Geraldine at 8 a.m. each day and returned from Timaru about 5 p.m. the same day. The regulating of trucks on the service was difficult because the drivers of the trucks did not know the quantity of goods to be picked up, but larger trucks could be put on the run if there was the demand. Mr Baird refused the application. The Authority reserved decision on applications by the Geraldine Transport Company and Alexander Durham Cormack for extensions to their respective licences to allow the carriage of bricks from Ashburton to Geraldine.
